Our son Teddy was diagnosed with Specific Antibody Disorder Deficiency in the summer of 2019. Specific Antibody Deficiency means he doesn't have the antibodies he needs to fight things like colds, infections or even more serious diseases. Even though he has been immunized multiple times his body doesn't remember it and it's like he's never been immunized. This has resulted in him being very sick and hospitalized many times in his short life. But the good news is the doctor's at Texas Children's can treat him with infusion therapy. The therapy puts the antibodies he needs into his body.
But Teddy is only 5 and he gets scared of needles and procedures. My family is lucky because we have a personal connection to Elsa, the therapy dog at Texas Children's. My husband is a groomer and grooms Elsa every week. So Teddy knows Elsa very well.
For his first infusion Teddy was really scared and cried a lot. He asked for Elsa and the hospital was amazing and allowed Elsa to come to his infusion. She made everything ok and he was able to get his infusion.
There are a lot of kids like Teddy. A lot of kids get scared, especially when they are chronically ill. Texas Children's need more dogs like Elsa to help more kids like Teddy. Please help us raise more money so Texas Children's can get more dogs.
