This July, I am swimming for my 4-year-old niece Corinne who is currently a patient at Texas Children's Hospital. Diagnosed in September 2024 with a Stage IV Metastatic Wilms Tumor, she has undergone surgery, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy treatment under the care of the amazing medical teams at Texas Children's. Her journey continues because of the life-changing work of the dedicated staff at the Texas Children's Oncology Center and Surgical Research Center.
According to the National Cancer Institute, only 4% of all government-allocated cancer research funds goes toward pediatric cancer research. This despite the fact that pediatric cancers are the leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. for children and young adults under the age of 20. Given recent federal funding cuts, fundraising is even more critical than ever for pediatric oncology research.
I'm honored to swim for Corinne, alongside 25 family members, in hopes that the funds we raise move the world one step closer to a day that any child facing any cancer diagnosis receives the BEST care in the world.
Every dollar raised will be directed toward the Texas Children's Surgical Oncology Labperforming cutting edge clinical, translational, and basic science research focused on pediatric solid tumors. Led by Dr. Sanjeev Vasudevan, their work is centered on finding new cures through cancer modeling, molecular profiling, and preclinical testing of novel targeted agents.
